MSNBC's Keith Olbermann guts Focus on the Family by John in DC - 1/30/2005 11:42:57 PM READ his BLOG -Oh my, this is good. http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/ Hey, guys, worry about yourselves. You're spewing hate, while assuming that for some reason, God has chosen you and you alone in all of history to understand the mysteries of existence, when mankind's existence is filled with ample evidence that nobody yet has been smart enough to discern an answer. You might try keeping it simpler: did you help others, or hurt them? I'll be happy to be judged on the answer to that question, and if it's a group session, I don't expect I'll find many members of "Focus On Family" in the "done ok" line. Then be sure to read his next blog entry on the same page, where he talks about Dobson, the head of Focus on the Family, doing an action alert to have his minions write Olbermann: Firstly, you wouldn't think a member of this group could misspell "Christian," but sure enough, one of the missives had the word as "Christain" three times. I think just about every word you could imagine was butchered at some point (and we're not talking typos here - we're talking about repeated identical misspellings): Spong, Spounge, Spnge - presumably meaning "Sponge." Dobsin, Dobsen, Debsin, Dubsen, Dobbins - presumably Dr. Dobson. Sevility- I'm not sure about this one. This might be "civility," or it might refer to the city in Spain. The best of them was not a misspelling but a Freudian slip of biblical proportions. A correspondent, unhappy that I did not simply agree with her fire-and-brimstone forecast for me, wrote "I showed respect even though I disagreed with you and yet you have the audacity to call me intelligent." Well, you have me there, Ma'am. My mistake.---and a rye quote and comment from a friend --->"I'm sick to death of Jesus. I feel that Jesus and ParisHilton are both overexposed. I've seen enough of both ofthem. And I think I'm getting more atheist because of theway the country is getting more into bible-thumping."-- Actress Kathy GriffinOutword Magazine, Dec. 23.*****I feel pretty much the same way about "christians" (in the popular context).I'm praying for the day that they become as relevant as Elvis fans. Perhapsthey can build an amusement attraction in the vicinity of Branson, MO.--dm-------This blog has some comments on Keith Olbermann also. See the entry for Tuesday, February 1. http://religiousliberal.blogspot.com/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3)From another blog, Terry Gross interviews Richard Land http://iamachristiantoo.org/ scroll down to 1/22/2005Terry Gross Interviews Richard LandTerry Gross interviewed Richard Land and Jim Wallis on Thursday's show. I will post shortly on the Wallis interview, but first, some observations on the interview with Richard Land. http://www.kintera.org/site/pp.asp?c=afIKIWMGG&b=121857 He has been called the "Un-Falwell", and he certainly does put a much better face on the Christian right than Falwell or Robertson. However, Terry Gross caught him contradicting himself on moral priorities. When she asked him about moral values, Land spoke about abortion and gay marriage. Terry later mentioned Wallis' argument that peace and poverty are moral values and asked Land why conservative Christians focus so much on abortion and gay marriage instead of peace and poverty. He replied that it's because that's all the media ever asks them about. But given the earlier opportunity to talk about any moral issues he chose, he talked about abortion and gay marriage! Terry caught him on this, and I think it demonstrates nicely his focus on these two issues while ignoring much more pressing moral issues in the world. (more.) http://iamachristiantoo.org/index.php?p=45#more-45The above is a prime example: Nobody knows how to lie and bear false witness like a Southern Baptist.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------4)Now some bad, sad news --->KENTUCKY FAIRNESS ALLIANCEFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Andrea Hildebran Tuesday 02/01/2005 502-387-0625(Louisville) The Kentucky Fairness Alliances (KFA) reacted today to the second degree manslaughter and tampering with evidence convictions of Josh Cottrell in the slaying of Elizabethtown man Richie Phillips. Evidence at the trial indicated anti-gay bias as a motivation for the crime, as well as a level of brutality uncommon in instances of self defense.Andrea Hildebran, Executive Director of KFA, said "This is a disappointing and disturbing verdict against a man who killed a person, stuffed his body in a suitcase, and dumped it in a lake." Commenting on the `gay-panic' defense utilized by Cottrell's defense, Hildebran continued, "By appealing to negative stereotypes rather than logic, the defense asked the jury to join them in condemning Richie Phillips for being gay. Bias against gay-people has not only ended the life of Richie Phillips, it has done violence to the Kentucky system of justice."Elizabethtown resident Abby Drane expressed shock over the verdict of manslaughter and commented on how the case reflected on her city. "I'm not sure this town will be able to build a thriving economy and diverse population if they cannot apply the laws of humanity for all people," said Drane, a KFA member, "If Josh Cottrell had killed a woman for making unwanted advances in a motel room; I don't think it would have been the same verdict. It appears to me that there are some people in this town that believe it was okay to kill this man because he was gay."---The Kentucky Fairness Alliance seeks to advance equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people through leadership development, public education, and by encouraging participation in the democratic process.
