    JAMES DOBSON IS AN IDIOT

    KKK comparison beneath contempt

The judiciary, particularly the federal judiciary, has always been a convenient target for demagogues, but the kind of vilification of the courts found in much of today's political debate is a harsher, meaner form of attack that is unwarranted.
The judiciary is not and should not be above criticism; not at all. But extreme statements such as comparing the Supreme Court to the Ku Klux Klan go beyond any sort of legitimate criticism that contributes to meaningful debate of issues.
The comments of James Dobson, leader of the conservative Focus on the Family organization, are unworthy of any individual who expects to be taken seriously as a commentator on societal and political issues. Dobson was interviewing the author of a new book critical of the Supreme Court on his radio show when he made this indefensible remark:
"I heard a minister the other day talking about the great injustice and evil of the men in white robes, the Ku Klux Klan, that roamed the country in the South, and they did great wrong to civil rights and to morality. And now we have black-robed men, and that's what you're talking about."
That is a gratuitous personal insult to the members of the court and an insult to the institution.
Dobson evidently has failed to notice that there are two black-robed women on the court. If his objection is only to the black-robed men, however, he should acknowledge that six of the seven males on the court were appointed by presidents from the Republican Party with which Dobson is so closely identified.
The First Amendment regularly upheld by the court gives Dobson the right to say what he said. We fully support that right, as distasteful as we find his remarks to be. But he would be well advised to think about the court's critical role as guardian of that right before he makes another grossly insulting remark about it.
